You’ve got options

There are a range of optional coverages available to enhance your protection.

Third Party Liability

This protects you from the financial risk of an at-fault accident. It covers expenses such as repair costs, legal fees, and medical costs. While having this coverage is required, you can choose an amount beyond the minimum ($200,000 in most provinces).

Collision

Just like it sounds, this coverage protects your vehicle from collisions. For example, an at fault collision with another vehicle or an object.

Comprehensive

This is coverage for damage caused by something other than a collision. It includes coverage for damage caused by vandalism, fires, falling objects, or extreme weather.

Helpful tips from our advisors.

Car insurance can be complex but it doesn’t have to be. Take it from our advisors, they’ll tell you everything you need to consider to get on the road with confidence.

“If you are purchasing a vehicle in BC either privately or from a dealership, be sure that you have a copy of the previous owner’s registration with an original signature by all registered owners, a transfer tax form completed in blue or black ink, along with valid ID. Coming to the office with the correct paperwork and ID saves you time.”

– Megan Carter, Advisor | Victoria, BC

“If you’re in a car accident, Loss of Use coverage covers your cost to rent a vehicle while your car is being repaired or while you’re waiting for a loss settlement. Loss of Use coverage is included in Roadstar and Roadside Plus, but with specified limits. I always offer my clients a quote for additional Loss of Use coverage.”

Answering your most common questions.

What is eligible for online renewals with ICBC?

Online renewal is available to private passenger vehicles owned by one person who does not need to make any coverage changes at the time of renewal. That means leased vehicles and jointly owned vehicles are not eligible for online renewals. Learn more about eligibility or renew online at renew.icbc.com.

You can always renew any policy with an Acera advisor by completing the renewal request form, or visiting your local office.

Do I need to visit an office to renew my ICBC Autoplan?

Probably not. Most policies can be renewed online or by phone. You will need to visit us in person for the following transactions:

  • Transferring vehicle ownership
  • Canceling a policy
  • Replacing a license plate
  • Making changes to a policy for a vehicle with more than one owner

Start your phone renewal by completing the renewal request form, or visit one of our offices.

How do I get ICBC’s distance-based discount?

If you drive less than 10,000 kilometers in a year, you may be eligible for a 10-15% discount. At the time of your renewal or new policy purchase you will need to provide your vehicle’s odometer reading. You can submit your odometer reading directly to ICBC or to your advisor at Acera Insurance. The discount is calculated using two odometer readings. If you’re submitting your first odometer reading, you’ll need to submit a second one in a year to be eligible for the discount.

Can I use my personal vehicle for business?

Commercial auto coverage is necessary for personally owned vehicles that are used for business purposes – such as ridesharing or food delivery.

If you’re using your vehicle for business purposes, talk to your advisor to make sure you’re properly covered or contact one of our branches for more information.

Can I bundle my auto and home insurance together to save money?

Yes, also called a multi-line discount, some insurance companies offer discounts when you buy multiple types of insurance policies from the same provider. Ask your advisor about available multi-line discounts.
