BC builders take note – new sprinkler requirements are coming July 2017

As of July 20, 2017, a new BC Building Code update will take effect. Sprinklers will be required on balconies of all new four-storey wood-frame residential buildings. Currently, sprinklers are generally not required for residential buildings that are four storeys or under.

The BC Building Code sets out regulations for the design and construction of new buildings as well as changes, repairs and demolition of existing buildings. It is based on the National Building Code of Canada, with the latest updates coming from the 2015 edition.

New requirements will only be enforced on new construction – owners will not need to upgrade existing buildings to be in compliance.
