The BC government has announced three new programs that will provide local, small-scale and Indigenous cannabis producers more direct access to retailers and consumers. The anticipated launch dates are in 2021 and 2022.
Direct Delivery Sales Program
Through this program, small-scale Health Canada-licensed producers (including nurseries) will be permitted to deliver their products directly to authorized retailers. Currently, non-medical retailers are required to purchase their inventory through the BC Liquor Distribution Branch (BC Cannabis Wholesale). This program will provide opportunities for local, small producers to compete and succeed in the legal market currently dominated by large producers. Criteria for this program has not been released; however, it is expected to launch in 2022.
Farm-gate sales program
BC’s cannabis growers will be permitted through this program to set up stores to sell their own products on their production sites (“farm-gate” stores). The ability to sell on site will give local producers more direct access to consumers and encourage consumers to buy local and support BC’s rural communities. This program is expected to launch in 2022.
Indigenous Shelf Space Program
Expected to launch sometime next year , this program will promote local Indigenous producers to consumers by designating spaces in BC Cannabis Stores to highlight products from BC’s Indigenous-owned businesses. Featured products will also be available through private retailers and at the BC Cannabis Store online.
