Employee Assistance Programs in Ontario

Employee assistance programs reduce absenteeism and healthcare costs

Most people spend more hours at work than anywhere else, in addition to the time they spend commuting each day. We know that today’s workforce is looking for a better work-life balance.

That’s why more corporate wellbeing programs are being implemented by companies of all sizes. Employees who are stressed, unhealthy or work too much overtime tend to take more time off than their healthier colleagues. Wellbeing programs can significantly reduce absenteeism as well as reduced employer healthcare costs. Studies show less stressed employees increase productivity and tend to stay with their companies, even if they are offered higher-paying jobs by the competitor.

How EAP programs in Ontario work

Employees and their household members may use EAPs to help manage issues in their personal lives. EAP counsellors typically provide assessment, support, and referrals to additional resources such as counsellors for a limited number of program-paid counselling sessions. The issues for which EAPs provide support vary, but examples include:

  • substance abuse
  • occupational stress
  • emotional distress
  • health care concerns
  • major life events (births, accidents and deaths)
  • financial or non-work-related legal concerns
  • family/personal relationship issues
  • work relationship issues
  • concerns about aging parents
