The popularity and accessibility of e-bikes have skyrocketed in recent years, and they are an increasingly common addition to households across Canada. With certain models of e-bikes now valued in the tens of thousands, many of our clients at Acera Insurance have asked about the availability of insurance coverage. If you have one (or several) of your own e-bikes, it is important to be informed about your provincial regulations on their usage as well as how (and if) your existing home insurance provides coverage.
E-bike regulations across Canada
Currently, the use of e-bikes are permitted and regulated in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec and Saskatchewan.
Rules applicable to all provinces
- E-bikes are limited to 500-watt output and a top speed of 32 km/h (20 mph).
- Riders must wear approved helmets.
- E-bikes must have handlebars and fully functional pedals.
- E-bikes cannot be operated by battery alone and power assistance must disengage when the rider stops pedaling.
- E-bikes cannot be modified to increase speed beyond the legal limit.
- Labelling from the manufacturer must state the e-bike meets the definition of a “power-assisted bicycle” according to federal requirements.
Rules that vary across provinces
- Age requirements for riders vary, but the minimum age ranges from 12 to 16 in most of the 10 provinces.
- Certain provinces have stipulations for when driver’s licences are required. Vehicle registration and liability insurance are not required.
- Generally, e-bikes are subject to the same rules of the road as regular bicycles.
- In 2024, British Columbia implemented new regulations which introduced e-bike classifications that determine where each type is allowed to be ridden.
- It’s important to note that municipalities within provinces may have additional bylaws affecting e-bike usage, such as restrictions on certain types of e-bikes on specific trails or bike lanes.
E-bike coverage under standard home insurance
Coverage for e-bikes under home insurance policies will vary by insurer. While e-bikes may be included under personal property coverage, in some cases, they are excluded entirely. Connect with your Acera Insurance advisor to review the existing coverage under your home insurance and explore options that may be available through your insurer.
Specialized, standalone insurance for e-bikes
Acera Insurance has partnered with Pedal Power to provide specialized, standalone insurance policies specifically tailored to cover you and your e-bike for theft, damage, bodily injury and legal liability. Discounts are also available for members of certain associations such as the International Mountain Biking Association and Hub Cycling.
