ICBC Announces New Financial Relief for BC Drivers

In response to the financial challenges that many BC residents are facing amid the COVID-19 pandemic, ICBC has announced changes it is implementing to provide some relief:

  • For those who choose to cancel their insurance during this time, ICBC is waiving the $30 cancellation fee and $18 re-plating fee. The plates must be removed and the uninsured vehicle must remain off the road.
  • As of May 30, those who reinsure their vehicles will be able to re-use their previous plates. Those who reinsure their vehicles prior to May 30 will be asked to surrender the old plates and new plates will be issued at no charge.
  • Those who have fleets insured with ICBC can suspend their insurance during the pandemic.
  • Those with learner’s drivers licenses (Classes 5 to 8) that expire during the pandemic will not have to pay a fee for their first knowledge test once ICBC resumes testing.
  • Normally, personal vehicles being used for deliveries could fall under the delivery use rate class.  Under the current circumstances, those who are using their vehicles to deliver food and medical supplies are not required to make any changes to their insurance policies or pay higher premiums.

Previously, ICBC announced that those on a monthly Autoplan payment plan could apply to defer premium payments up to 90 days.
