If you live in Alberta’s hail belt, then you’ve probably experienced the mad dash to try and save your plants or park your vehicle in a covered space before the storm hits.
Since 2020, the Calgary area has experienced several catastrophic hailstorms that have resulted in more than $5 billion in insured losses. With insurers facing frequent, massive claims, coverage is becoming pricier and harder to get.
It’s a tough spot to be in – how do you make sure you’re properly covered without breaking the bank?
The answer is simple: Smart planning and being proactive about both your insurance and managing the risks to your property. Here’s how you can safeguard your home and vehicles.
Don’t wait until the storm hits to review your insurance policies
Not sure if hail damage is covered under your home or auto policy? It’s time to chat with your Acera Insurance advisor.
We can help you find the best coverage options for hail-prone areas and can suggest ways to “build back better” after a storm. Plus, we’ll be able to give you a few tips on how to keep your premiums manageable while making sure you’re fully protected.
Protect your vehicles
If you live in a hail zone, try utilizing these tips to help protect your vehicles:
- Try to find a storage centre for your RV and other recreational vehicles that is covered and outside of hail zones.
- Invest in covers for your RV’s roof vents and skylights.
- Remember to park your vehicle in your garage or carport, especially when you are away during hail season!
- DIY car protection by keeping a car cover, tarp, or blanket on hand with bungee cords or rope so you can quickly protect your vehicle if you’re parked somewhere safe.
Hail proof your home
Knowing the age of the exteriors of your home is important for risk management. If your roof was installed in 1998, that was 27 years ago which is not as recent as you might think! If your roof is getting up there in age, it might be time to start planning for a replacement and what type of materials you would like to use.
Don’t wait for the next storm to hit – start taking these easy steps to avoid hail damage:
- Maintain your roof and gutters and have your roof regularly inspected.
- Replace your roof with hail-resistant material like metal, rubber or tile.
- If you’re building a home or remodeling, avoid vinyl siding and instead upgrade to something more durable like brick, stucco or Hardie board.
- Trim back trees since broken branches can hit your home.
- Ask your Acera advisor about insurance policies that offer “build back better” solutions which can help you upgrade your home after a claim.
- Learn how depreciation may affect a potential claim and review your policy’s coverage.
