Answering your most common questions.
Is the Canadian government-provided disability coverage enough to take care of me?
The Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Quebec Pension Plan (QPP) do offer some disability coverage. But these plans have considerable benefit limitations so you should consider additional coverage options to ensure you and your family are taken care of.
I have a disability policy through work. Do I need another policy?
Depending on what your employer offers, you may not need extra coverage. Make sure you take a close look at their policy and decide from there. There is also the issue of employer plans ending when your employment with them ends. If you have your own separate disability insurance policy, you won’t have any interruptions if you leave your job.
How much does disability insurance cost?
It depends on your coverage and your needs but you can probably expect premiums of about 2-5% of your salary. Some factors that can affect cost include:
- Benefit period
- Waiting period
- Coverage amount
- Age
- Health
- Occupation
