Here are our tips for preventing vehicle theft in Alberta:
- When selling a vehicle, accompany buyers to the bank and observe the bank draft being ordered. Make sure you have it in your possession before handing over the keys to the vehicle. Unfortunately, fake bank drafts are common.
- Do not leave your vehicle running unattended. Install a remote starter if you need to warm up the vehicle before you drive.
- Do not leave your keys unattended and put it somewhere secure if it’s not on your person.
- Secure the vehicle – ensure all the windows are closed, close the sunroof and lock the doors.
- Do not hide a spare key in the vehicle.
- If parked in a garage, make sure the doors and windows to the building are secure.
- Consider installing security cameras and lighting around your garage or where you park your vehicle at home.
- Install a car alarm.
- Use a steering wheel locking device.
- If not at home, park on well-lit streets – the busier the better. Bonus security points if you park in a lot with security patrols, cameras, gated entry, and/or someone working at an entrance/exit booth.
- Do not leave anything in plain sight in your vehicle.
- Never leave bank cards, SIN cards or any other personal identification in your vehicle.
- Don’t leave your garage opener in your vehicle.
If your vehicle is stolen, report it to the police immediately. It’s a good idea to have digital copies of your registration and photos of your vehicle. You should also begin a claim with your insurance company and contact your insurance broker. Your insurance may cover theft if you have comprehensive or all-perils coverage. It will take time to process this claim as there is generally a waiting period to allow the vehicle to be recovered. Your broker will be able to explain the process and answer any questions you may have.
