Hosting a summer party? From pool safety to liquor liability, here’s what homeowners need to know about managing risks when entertaining guests at home.

Managing your backyard risks: Hosting a party

Whether it’s a backyard wedding, family reunion or neighbourhood barbecue, as a host, you are responsible for the safety and wellbeing of your guests.

We know that insurance is probably the last thing on your mind when planning a celebration, but it’s important to plan for the unexpected.

Preparing your home to host

When you invite people into your home, you take on a level of responsibility for their safety. Before your guests arrive, be sure to:

  • Minimize tripping hazards by ensuring that walkways and gathering areas are well-lit and free of clutter.
  • Keep your first aid kit stocked and accessible.
  • Store valuables such as jewelry in a secure location.
  • Have a safe space to keep pets who may become reactive.
  • Assign a sober adult to supervise swimmers, if you have a pool .
  • Keep the gate locked when the pool is not in use.

Do you need insurance to host a backyard event?

Many homeowners assume that their home insurance will cover an event, but that’s not always the case – especially if alcohol is being served.

Before you send out invitations, speak with your Acera Insurance advisor. They can help you understand your current coverage and recommend additional protection based on your event.

Depending on the size and nature of your gathering, you may need:

  • Event liability insurance: Helps cover injury or property damage claims during your event.
  • Host liquor liability: Protects you against alcohol-related injury or damage claims that result from serving liquor.

Serving alcohol responsibly

Serving alcohol comes with added responsibility. For example, if a guest is over-served and gets into an accident while driving impaired, you could be held liable.

To reduce the risks:

  • Have a designated driver.
  • Be aware of the alcohol consumption of those in attendance.
  • Communicate safe transportation options.
  • Offer a space for guests to stay the night.

Questions?

Depending on the event, your insurance coverage may depend on the insurer and your policy options. Talk to your broker about what protection is available for you.
