Alberta Car Insurance Coverage Options
Whether you’re buying a new vehicle or shopping around for a new car insurance policy, it’s important to understand the different types of coverage available to you. Your coverage options also impact your car insurance premiums – which is why cheaper isn’t always better. Budget and protection are a delicate balance and one an auto insurance broker can help you with.
Here are a few car insurance coverage options:
- Third-Party Liability
- Accident Benefits
- Direct Compensation for Property Damage
- Collision
- Comprehensive
- Loss of Use
- Rental Car
- Ride-Sharing (i.e. Uber, Lyft)
Many car insurance companies also offer unique coverage options and special discounts or benefits. An Acera Insurance auto insurance broker can help you determine what coverage you need.
Mandatory Coverage
Third-party liability insurance is mandatory in all provinces and territories. In some provinces, this is provided by government insurers while it is only available through private auto insurance companies elsewhere. Some provincial governments also mandate the price for private insurers. However, the minimum required limit is quite low and may not cover the true expense of a serious accident.
Third-party liability covers bodily injury to third parties. It can also cover legal expenses if you’re sued. For example, if you rear-end someone in Alberta, your insurance would cover the costs associated with any injuries sustained. If that driver sued you, this coverage would also help cover your legal expenses including defence costs, judgement awards and settlements.
Acera Insurance’s car insurance brokers strongly recommend $2 million for third party liability auto insurance coverage due to the costs associated with accidents.
Another required coverage is accident benefits. This helps cover medical and death benefits for yourself and any passengers in your vehicle after an accident, regardless of fault.
Finally, direct compensation for property damage (or a variation of this) coverage is required.
Direct compensation property damage can help cover costs to fix or replace your vehicle if you’re involved in a collision that was caused by another driver. Even if you’re deemed partially at fault for the crash, you will receive partial benefits under direct compensation property damage (the rest you’ll need to pay out of pocket or use your collision coverage if it’s on your policy). It does not provide coverage, however, if you are fully responsible for an accident—for that, you will need collision coverage.
Direct compensation property damage was automatically added to the insurance policies for all Alberta drivers on Jan. 1, 2022. Learn more.
Collision Coverage
If you’re at fault in an accident (or partially at fault) this coverage will help cover the costs of repairs to your vehicle.
Comprehensive Coverage
Accidents aren’t the only cause of damage to vehicles: hail, storms, and vandalism are just a few of the other risks. Comprehensive coverage protects your vehicle in the event of many non-accident-related causes of damage.
If you have financed your vehicle, you will likely be required by your lender to have full collision and comprehensive coverage. This is because if the vehicle is damaged or destroyed, you will still need to repay the loan. Car insurance helps ensure the lender will get their money back and so it is required in many cases.
Collector Car Insurance Coverage
Your classic car isn’t quite as replaceable as the car you drive every day, so keep it safe when you’re driving and showing it. We offer:
- Total Replacement Cost: You’ll get 100% of your car’s insured value in the event of a covered total loss—with zero deprecation.
- Appraisal-Free Coverage: We work with you to determine the value of your vehicle, which can save you the hassle and cost of an appraisal.
- Flexible Usage: Get coverage that allows just-for-fun driving as well as car shows, with reduced rates that consider whether your car is parked for extended periods of time.
Other Car Insurance Coverages
You may want or require different insurance coverages. These vary by the auto insurance company. For example, if you drive for Uber or Lyft, you will require special insurance in order to be adequately covered in the event of an accident.
You may also want the loss of use coverage, which provides you with funds for a rental car in the event yours is involved in a covered claim. You can also opt for rental car coverage if you rent vehicles and do not want to use rental agency car insurance.
Remember, if you use your vehicle for work (other than commuting) or have it registered under a company, you’ll need commercial vehicle insurance.
There are many other options available for car insurance. Talk to your Acera Insurance auto insurance broker for more details.

How are car insurance rates calculated in Alberta?
As your car insurance broker, we will help you understand your insurance. This includes explaining how car insurance rates are calculated and what you can do to keep them low.
Here are a few of the factors that impact your car insurance premiums:
- Your insurance and claims history
- Your credit rating
- Your coverage options, including deductible
- Your driving record
- Your demographics
- Where you live
- The make, model, and age of your vehicle
- How you use your car
Every insurance company is different and may calculate rates slightly differently. Provincial governments may also control rates to a certain extent in some provinces. It’s a good idea to talk to an Acera Insurance car insurance broker if you’re concerned about your rates.
