There’s nothing quite like the thrill of taking your car out on the track, where you can sharpen your skills and experience everything your vehicle was built to do. Track day events offer a unique opportunity to do just that – in a controlled and purpose-built space with a community that shares your passion. But here’s what many drivers don’t realize until it’s too late: Standard car insurance policies won’t cover your vehicle during these events.
Why standard car insurance excludes track days
Your traditional car insurance is designed to cover everyday use – commuting, errands, and weekend driving – and premiums are calculated assuming the vehicle is being used primarily on public roads. During track days, driving is faster, more intense, and puts more strain on your vehicle which can lead to accidents that are unlikely during normal driving.
From an insurance perspective, these factors introduce significantly higher risk exposure. That’s why there are usually specific exclusions in the policy wording for participation in a “contest, show or race” that includes a “race or speed test” or “performance driving.”
This means that if you crash during a track day or race (even during untimed, training sessions) your insurance won’t pay for damages to your vehicle, potentially leaving you out of pocket for thousands of dollars in repairs or replacement costs.
