A true highlight of childhood for many were the hours spent outside – jumping on trampolines, playing in treehouses and trying to see if you could do a 360 on your swing set. These are ingredients for a perfect summer day.
Before you set out to recreate the same magic for your kids, take the time to review what your home insurance covers when it comes to trampolines, treehouses and playsets.
Understanding your liability
Children are wild, fearless and often have little sense of self-preservation when it comes to having fun. That’s why the risks associated with trampolines, treehouses and backyard playsets are something you should be prepared for.
It’s important to understand what’s covered under the personal liability portion of your home insurance. Each of these structures carries the risk of someone falling and injuring themselves, but this is especially true for trampolines.
Treehouses and large playsets are typically classified as “accessory structures” to your home and would fall under that coverage. Trampolines are usually considered recreational or fitness equipment. While they may be categorized differently, injuries related to the use of trampolines, playsets or treehouses may still be covered under your home insurance policy.
If you’re building a treehouse, be sure to double check local building codes and safety requirements since some municipalities might not allow permanent treehouses or large backyard structures without permits.
It’s also a good idea to speak with your Acera Insurance advisor before installing a trampoline, erecting a playset or building a treehouse. They can help confirm what’s covered and what your options are in case of a claim.
Keeping everyone safe
Like backyard pools , trampolines and large play structures can pose a liability risk. You should have a fence with a lock to restrict access and prevent unsupervised use. Without these precautions, your backyard fixtures can be considered “attractive nuisances” and increase the risk of unwanted people coming into your backyard and injuring themselves.
For example, if a neighbour’s child is injured on your trampoline (even if you are not aware they are using it), you could be held financially responsible, depending on the circumstances and your coverage.
Supervision is also key. An adult should always be present when children are using these play structures. Be sure to follow all manufacturer safety instructions to help reduce the risk of injury.
Your Acera Insurance advisor is your best resource for risk management and protection. Speak with them to ensure you and your property are properly covered.
