At the scene
First, make sure everyone is safe.
- Check for injuries and call emergency services if needed.
- Do not move anyone who is injured.
- If possible, move vehicles to a safe location.
- Turn on hazard lights and move all uninjured passenger to safety.
- Take photos and record what happened.
- Get the contact details for witnesses
Exchange information:
- Name and phone number.
- Insurance and policy number (take a photo of their pink card).
You need to file a police report if:
- There are injuries.
- Missing documentation.
- The vehicles are not drivable.
- Damage exceeds provincial threshold (e.g., Alberta’s is $5,000 in total combined damages).
Even if you feel fine, visit a doctor. Injuries can appear later.
