Kelowna auto insurance: ICBC policies

Everyone’s basic auto insurance in Kelowna, and the rest of British Columbia, is purchased through ICBC, which provides universal auto insurance to all motorists in the province. This coverage package is called Autoplan, and while it covers the basics, most people need more.

Basic auto insurance in Kelowna includes:

  • Third-party liability: This covers damages or injuries caused by your vehicle to property up to $200,000
  • Enhanced Care: This pays for medical expenses and loss of income if you are injured in an accident, regardless of who was at fault.
  • Basic vehicle damage: This covers damage to your vehicle to the extent you are not at fault (does not include hit and run).

Optional auto coverages (such as extended third-party liability, collision, comprehensive, specified perils, hit and run, and loss of use) can also be purchased through ICBC, or you can buy them from certain private insurers. Optional auto insurance provides you with the opportunity to choose what type of coverage you want and how much you want to pay for it.

Are you entitled for car insurance discounts? ICBC discounts are available for:

Private insurance options in Kelowna

Did you know you have options for your car insurance? While the basic ICBC Autoplan is mandatory, we also have private insurance options available to create customized coverage for all your needs.

While you need to purchase your basic insurance through ICBC, your optional coverages, like extended third-party liability, collision, comprehensive and roadside assistance, can be purchased through certain private insurers.

For some people, purchasing these additional auto insurance coverages through private insurers can be more affordable or a better coverage fit.

Additional auto coverage and the benefits of Optiom

Optiom is an additional product that can be purchased for replacement coverage on your vehicle that’s up to 10 years of age, with some exclusions.

Brand New Vehicle Replacement:

  • Current and prior year vehicles under 25,000 kilometers are eligible for up to 84 months of coverage.
  • Gives you peace of mind knowing that you are guaranteed the MSRP of your vehicle at the time of a total loss within those seven years.
  • Helps to pay off any remaining loan amounts owed if your vehicle is financed at the time of loss.
  • Should there be a loss to your vehicle and ICBC opts to repair rather than write your vehicle off, original equipment manufacturer parts are used rather than generic or rebuilt parts. This is especially useful for leased vehicles. If there is an accident and repairs were made with generic or rebuilt parts, when you turn your lease in, they will go over the vehicle, remove any aftermarket parts and install OEM parts at cost to you.

Used Vehicle Replacement:

  • Current and prior year vehicle models up to 10 years old over 25,000 kilometers are eligible for 36-60 months of coverage.
  • Guarantees the Black Book Value at the time of the application and that price will be locked in for your entire policy term, ensuring the value of your vehicle will not depreciate in the event of a total loss during that period.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • You must maintain collision and comprehensive coverage.
  • Vehicle’s may not have a modified, rebuilt or have salvaged status.

The cost of auto insurance in Kelowna depends on the number of years of driving, at-fault accidents, in some cases, the number of motor vehicle tickets received in a year, what type of vehicle is being driven, and the coverage that is being carried. Yes, but it’s important that you tell your broker that you use your vehicle for commuting to and from work. How you use your vehicle affects the rate class used to determine the insurance premium you pay.

Implemented in May 2021, Enhanced Care coverage saves drivers money on their insurance – approximately 20 per cent or $400, on average. How? The costs previously associated with the litigation-based system, like those for lawyers and legal fees, are largely removed. Those savings go toward lowering rates and improving benefits.
