Victoria auto insurance: Understanding ICBC policies
In Victoria, everyone’s standard auto insurance is purchased through the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia, also known as ICBC. This trusted provider offers what is referred to as Basic Autoplan insurance, ensuring all motorists have essential protection on the road. While Autoplan delivers a solid foundation, many drivers often decide they want a little extra peace of mind.
With basic auto insurance in Victoria, you’re covered for:
- Third-party liability: Safeguards you against damages or injuries your vehicle may cause to property, up to $200,000.
- Enhanced care: Offers support for medical expenses and loss of income if you’re injured in an accident, no matter who was at fault.
- Basic vehicle damage: Provides up to $200,000 in coverage for damages and repairs to your vehicle when you are not at fault in an accident. Please note that this coverage does not include claims resulting from hit and run incidents.

Looking for additional protection and flexibility? Optional auto insurance lets you choose the coverage that best fits your lifestyle and budget. Our friendly advisors are here to help you explore your options and find the right policy for you.
Exclusive ICBC discounts for Victoria drivers
ICBC provides a range of discounts designed to help you lower your costs. Check out some of the ways you might qualify for savings below:
- Experienced-driver discount: The more years you’ve been driving without making a claim, the more you can save. ICBC recognizes up to 40 years of claims-free driving experience when calculating your discount.
- Senior driver discount: If you’re over 65 and use your vehicle primarily for pleasure (with commuting allowed up to six days a calendar month), you’ll enjoy special rates. Please note: If you’re at fault in two crashes during the same period, your savings may be removed.
- Distance-based discount: If you log fewer than 5,000 kilometres on your vehicle within a policy year, you could be eligible for a 10% reduction on your ICBC Basic Autoplan premium. Plus, if your annual mileage is under 15,000 kilometres, you could be eligible for a 10-15% discount on optional ICBC coverage such as Extension Third Party Liability, Collision, and Comprehensive. Be sure to provide accurate odometer readings to your broker to confirm eligibility for these savings
- Disability discount: To qualify, the registered owner or lessee(s) must be approved for the Fuel Tax Refund Program for Persons with Disabilities by the Consumer Taxation Branch (CTB). To confirm your eligibility, please bring your Fuel Tax Refund Program confirmation letter and registration number, insurance documents, and photo ID when you speak with an Autoplan broker. You may be eligible to receive a 25% discount on basic auto insurance for one vehicle.

Private auto insurance options in Victoria, BC
Did you know you have choices when it comes to car insurance? While the basic ICBC Autoplan is mandatory, you can also access private insurance options to customize your coverage to fit your needs.
Basic insurance must be purchased through ICBC. However, optional coverages can be obtained from either ICBC or select private insurers. These include:
- Extended third-party liability
- Collision
- Comprehensive
- Roadside assistance
For some drivers, buying these additional auto coverages from a private insurer may be more cost-effective or offer better coverage options.
Enhanced vehicle protection with Optiom
Optiom is a supplemental product that provides replacement coverage for vehicles up to 10 years old, subject to certain exclusions.
Brand New Vehicle Replacement:
- Vehicles from the current and previous year with under 25,000 kilometres qualify for up to 84 months of coverage.
- You’re guaranteed the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of your vehicle in the event of a total loss within seven years.
- Optiom helps pay off any remaining loan amount if your vehicle is financed at the time of loss.
Optional OEM Parts Add-On: If your vehicle needs repairs, original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts are used rather than generic or rebuilt parts. This is especially important for leased vehicles, as any aftermarket parts must be replaced with OEM parts when returning the lease, which could result in additional costs.
Used Vehicle Replacement:
- Vehicles up to 10 years old from the current or previous year with over 25,000 kilometres are eligible for 36 to 60 months of coverage.
- The Black Book Value at the time of application is locked in for your policy term, ensuring your vehicle’s value doesn’t depreciate in the event of a total loss during that period.
Eligibility Requirements:
- You must maintain both collision and comprehensive coverage.
- Vehicles must not be modified, rebuilt, or have a salvaged status.
Collector vehicle insurance in Victoria
Victoria truly stands out as an ideal destination for vintage vehicle enthusiasts. The region’s milder weather year-round allows you to enjoy scenic coastal drives in your cherished classic car, creating more opportunities for solo journeys or making memories with friends or loved ones.
Protecting your prized vehicle is essential, and with the right coverage, you’ll have peace of mind every time you hit the road. If you own a collectible car over 25 years old or a limited production vehicle older than 15 years, collectors vehicle insurance is an excellent investment – offering specialized protection tailored to your unique automotive treasure.
Save on your collector vehicle insurance premiums
You could be eligible for a lower rate on your collector vehicle insurance premium if you also own or lease, and insure, another non-collector vehicle, or have a company-assigned vehicle for everyday use. This valuable discount is designed for those who use a separate vehicle for regular transportation. Please note, if your collector vehicle is the only vehicle you own, you will not qualify for a reduced rate.
Maintaining collector vehicle status for continued eligibility and coverage
If your vehicle has been granted collector status, it’s important to keep it in collector-worthy shape. If your classic car’s condition slips below the collector requirements, you might need to switch to regular plates and standard auto insurance. Just a heads up to help you keep enjoying those special perks.

Luxury auto insurance in Victoria
As we’ve reviewed, in Victoria and throughout British Columbia, everyone gets their basic auto insurance through ICBC. If you drive a luxury vehicle, you’ll likely notice that your basic insurance premiums are a bit higher. This is because luxury vehicles are classified as high value, making them more costly to repair and requiring specialized skills. Additionally, if a luxury car is stolen, the replacement cost is significantly greater. These factors contribute to the higher rates, but rest assured – luxury auto insurance is designed to help keep your prized vehicle properly protected.
So, what is considered a high-value vehicle in Victoria? Typically, this refers to a private passenger car with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of more than $150,000 if the vehicle is less than seven years old, or more than $400,000 if it is less than 14 years old. In some cases, luxury vehicles also require a separate application for ICBC Own Damage coverage through a Special Risk Own Damage Policy to be insured for collision, comprehensive, or specified perils.
To note: high-value vehicles do not include commercial vehicles, motorcycles, motorhomes, or other recreational vehicles.
For expert guidance on protecting your high-value vehicle, reach out to one of our local brokers today. We’ll clearly explain each step and make sure your luxury car receives the comprehensive coverage it deserves, so you can drive with confidence.

The price of auto insurance in Victoria can vary significantly based on several factors. These include the number of years you have been driving, any at-fault accidents on your record, and the number of motor vehicle tickets you have received.
