Specialized insurance coverages for Ontario hospitality operations

The hospitality industry is as diverse as the people it serves. Each faces daily challenges, from customer safety to property upkeep, that can expose businesses to serious financial risk.

Hospitality insurance helps safeguard your livelihood by covering common risks such as property damage, business interruption, liability claims, and equipment breakdown. Whether you run a restaurant, café, hotel, or resort, the right coverage ensures you can focus on creating great guest experiences – not worrying about unexpected setbacks.

Acera Insurance works with top hospitality insurance companies to get you competitive hospitality insurance quotes and choice in your coverage. Your hospitality insurance should include the following:

  • Property Coverage – Can be broken down into more specific coverages. However, in general, property damage will insure property and contents that you own. Examples can be the building, equipment including leased/rented equipment, and stock.
  • Business Interruption – Also known as income interruption insurance, this coverage protects your business from financial instability by covering lost income in the event of a covered loss.
  • Commercial General Liability – A must-have for any hospitality business. CGL insurance helps cover legal expenses if a guest is injured or their property is damaged while on your premises.
  • Products & Completed Operations Liability – Protects you against third party claims of property damage or bodily injury that may occur due to your products or operations
  • Liquor Liability – Protects you against third party claims of damages or injuries when alcohol is deemed to be a contributing factor in an incident
  • Boiler and Machinery – Covers the cost of repair or replacement for the sudden and accidental mechanical breakdown of your equipment
  • Crime – Secures your business from financial loss either by employees or third-parties.
  • Cyber Liability – With many Ontario businesses storing customer data for reservations, loyalty programs, and payment systems, cyber liability insurance is critical. It helps you recover after a cyberattack or data breach.
  • Special Events Liability – From weddings in Niagara wineries to festivals in Toronto, this coverage protects against third-party property damage, bodily injury, medical payments, non-owned auto, food and beverage claims, volunteer liability, and more. It may be part of your CGL or purchased as an add-on.
  • Event Cancellation – Helps recoup financial losses if an event must be canceled, postponed, interrupted, relocated, or otherwise disrupted due to circumstances beyond your control.

Each hospitality insurance provider in Ontario may offer slightly different or additional coverage. Your needs will depend on the type of business you operate – for example, a Toronto restaurant may require enhanced liquor liability protection, while a Muskoka resort might need commercial vehicle insurance for guest shuttles or additional property coverage.

Your Acera Insurance hospitality broker will work with you to determine the coverage that fits your business best. We’ll guide you through your policy so you clearly understand what is – and isn’t – included. And in the event of a claim, we act as your advocate to make sure you receive the support you need.

Claims examples for Ontario hospitality businesses

Property coverage

A fire breaks out at your restaurant overnight causing damage to your owned building, equipment and stock costing $800,000 in property damage.

Result: Your property coverage provides reimbursement for the cost to repair the building and replace the equipment and stock so that you can continue to operate as soon as possible.

Business interruption

Your restaurant suffers an insured loss that will require 6 months to completely repair before you can operate again costing you $500,000 in lost income.

Result: The business interruption coverage within your hospitality insurance policy covers the lost income for the 6 months so that you can retain employees and pay rent while the building is being repaired.

Liquor liability

A customer at your bar becomes intoxicated and is told they can no longer be served and must leave your establishment. They decide to drive home instead of taking a taxi even though your staff has ordered one for them. The drunk customer gets involved in an accident resulting in $200,000 in damages and names your bar as being liable because they were served the alcohol there.

Result: The liquor liability coverage on your policy pays for the legal fees associated as well as the damages suffered if found liable.
